Advocacy for a Colonial New Amsterdam

This year, Governor's Island will be open to the public and it's the perfect opportunity to start advocating for a historical renovation for the southern portion of the island.

It doesn't appear that I'll get my way with the High Line being made into a West Side light rail for commuters, so I'll still champion my idea of making the non-historical portion of Gov's Isle made into the likeness of our past.

This map shows lower Manhattan and Governor's Island side by side (if you do not see the full image, click here. Though the centuries have seen the tip of the island grow wider and wider, the shape of Governor's Island is very close to the original southern tip of Manhattan.

Williamsburg, Virginia preserves the historic past of our nation. New York's history is always changing and with every passing decade, parts of our history is demolished, then rebuilt for a new future. Building a New Amsterdam on Governor's Island will bring New Yorkers and tourists around the world to a distant past when New York was a small port colony and not the metropolis it is today.

The colony of New Amsterdam can be created, almost to scale, up to Wall Street, the old barrier to protect the colonists from potential attacks from the native population.

The New York Harbor already holds Lady Liberty and Ellis Island, two national treasures for Americans. Adding a Colonial New Amsterdam in our harbor would continue to expand the rich history for New York an educate all of us on what Americans accomplished in the City of New York.

This is a brilliant idea! My son just finished studying New Amsterdam and the Dutch settlers relationship with the Lenape Indians. I also just visited Colonial Williamsburg in March. What a great idea. What can we do to make it happen?

One of the suggestions for Governor's Island is a "Theme Park." I would hope that the theme of New Amsterdam can be submitted for a suggestion.

I'm not sure if it's too late to still propose a New Amsterdam Theme Park, but the website for the island is www.govisland.com and there are special events there this summer.

Actually that's not why the wall was built. The Dutch and English were at war and the directors of the West India Company ordered Peter Stuyvesant to reinforce defenses. Author Russell Shorto has an excellent book that covers the Dutch colonial period titled "Island at the Center of the World." It will really change how you look at early American history and who the real founding fathers were.
